Andrews - TFL employee of Kensal Green Tube Station

Andrews lives in Kensal Green, and if you live or work there too, you will have seen him smiling and waving to travellers as they pass through the tube station. He has worked at the station since 2002, and moved to the area at the same time. Previous to that he lived in Willesden Green. His motivation for moving to the neighbourhood wasn't just his new work place, but also the friendly community that lives in the area.

Andrews has become well known for his perfectly formed calligraphic written quotes. His elegant and precise handwriting is a result of his background and previous profession as a fine artist. His work is proudly displayed at a university in his native country of Ghana - a result of studying the discipline at undergraduate degree level. Of all the fine art mediums, surprisingly it isn't calligraphy that Andrews prefers. His preference lies with 3 dimensional craft; naming ceramics, pottery and sculpture as his favourites.

The wisdom of Andrews (#andrewswisdom if you snap and tweet) comes from a carefully curated collection that he has built himself over the years. He decided to start writing the quotes because he wanted to contribute something positive to the community of Kensal Green. Almost as if to give something back to the friendly neighbourhood. He remarks that when new members of the TFL station staff come to work at Kensal Green, they all remark on how nice people are.

We talked about how he goes about choosing each quote from his collection. His aim is to help people achieve their goals in life. On thinking about what goal a person may have, he carefully considers which quote is appropriate for the display. He picks the quote according to the goal, and carefully ensures that the goal for the day is a variation on what he has written before. He is very sensitive to make sure that the quotes are politically neutral. Overall his main aim is to inspire. People have often stopped to tell him how a previous quote helped them on a particular day.

The beginning of 2016 will see some changes for Andrews. The restructuring of the TFL station staffing policy will mean that the #andrewswisdom will be extended to the tube stations surrounding Kensal Green. To name a few, commuters from Queens Park, Harlesden, Stonebridge Park and Kenton will soon beneft from his carefully considered quotes. Thankfully he will still appear at Kensal Green tube station, although unfortunately only on a sporadic basis.

Andrews welcomes feedback and submissions for his daily quotes.
